Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political extremism has become a critical issue globally, with significant implications for national security, particularly in regions prone to insurgent activities. In Nigeria, Bama LGA, Borno State, has been at the center of insurgent violence driven by extremist ideologies. Extremist groups in the region exploit socio-economic vulnerabilities, ethnic divisions, and weak governance structures to propagate their agendas and destabilize communities (Ibrahim & Suleiman, 2023; Garba et al., 2024). The activities of insurgents have led to widespread insecurity, displacement of residents, and disruption of socio-economic activities, thereby undermining national stability. National security efforts often grapple with the challenges of addressing the ideological roots of extremism while mitigating its immediate impacts. This study examines how political extremism in Bama LGA influences national security, focusing on insurgent activities and their broader implications for governance and development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The persistence of insurgent activities in Bama LGA highlights the complex interplay between political extremism and national security. Despite military interventions and counter-extremism policies, the region continues to face security challenges, including attacks on civilians, destruction of infrastructure, and displacement (Abubakar & Musa, 2024; Yakubu & Ahmed, 2023). The ideological motivations of insurgents complicate efforts to achieve lasting peace, as these beliefs often undermine state legitimacy and hinder community resilience. Additionally, the lack of in-depth analysis on the specific impact of extremism on local and national security in Bama LGA creates a gap in the understanding necessary to develop effective strategies. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the effect of political extremism on national security in Bama LGA.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study provides valuable insights into the relationship between political extremism and national security, using Bama LGA as a case study. By examining the ideological drivers of insurgent activities, the research offers practical recommendations for policymakers, security agencies, and community leaders. The findings will contribute to the design of more effective counter-extremism strategies and strengthen efforts to enhance national security in conflict-prone areas. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of addressing socio-economic and governance issues that create fertile ground for extremism, thereby promoting sustainable peace and development in Bama LGA and beyond.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on insurgent activities in Bama LGA, Borno State, and their impact on national security. It does not extend to other LGAs or broader national security challenges unrelated to political extremism.
